A few of my friends from Uk are very interested in ancient heritage, history, and cultural walks. We are planning to do a heritage walk from Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Durbar Square, through Dallu to Swayambhu temple.

I’ve heard that there are many historical and cultural sites along this route, including places like Lakha Tirtha and other lesser-known heritage landmarks. Does anyone know the actual traditional route and the important sites to visit along the way?

I also remember this heritage route being in the news a few years ago. There were talks about reviving and promoting it as a cultural tourism trail. However, it doesn’t seem to have been properly developed or popularized since then.

Also, can anyone recommend a knowledgeable guide, historian, or organization that leads heritage walks along this route? Any information, maps, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Good question,
for this i would like to Quote,
"......The walk from Hanuman Dhoka to Swayambhunath is not simply a route between two UNESCO monuments. It is a journey through the evolution of Kathmandu itself—from the royal, commercial, and religious heart of the old city to one of Nepal's most sacred hilltop shrines.

Suggested Heritage Route

  1. Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square
  2. Maru Ganesh
  3. Maru Hiti
  4. Banja Hiti
  5. Dami Tole
  6. Sunta Galli
  7. Michya Galli
  8. Bhelu Mahadev
  9. Dallu
  10. Nipu Hiti
  11. Bhuikhel
  12. Swayambhunath
This closely follows Kathmandu Metropolitan City's heritage corridor connecting around 20 historic sites between the old royal palace and Swayambhu. "

My Take:
The real story isn't the destination—it's the centuries of Newar life, trade, water systems, shrines, courtyards, and communities hidden between the two landmarks.

Please comment if you have any new routes in between.

Thank you for your reply. I am currently trying to gather more information about the route and the hidden archaeological and historical sites along the way. One of the most interesting points I came across was a location on the way to Dallu. In a Facebook video I found, a guide was explaining its significance to visitors during the Swoyambhu Mahotsav held about a month ago. I have shared the link below for reference.

I am also planning to join a short heritage tour with the respected guide featured in the video, as I unfortunately missed the Mahotsav. From what I understand, a heritage walk along this route was also conducted during the event, and I would love to learn more about the route, its history, and the lesser-known heritage sites connected to it.
